Winnipeg is a city where about three-quarters of the year is snow and precipitation. For the past few weeks, Winnipeg has already been experiencing the cold heart of the winter: the heavy snow, the slippery roads, and the very mild temperatures. So to provide safety for the cars on the roads, salt is poured on the snow. This is done because salt melts the snow. When salt is added to the snow, the temperature drops. A 10-percent salt solution freezes at 20 F (-6 C), and a 20-percent solution freezes at 2 F (-16 C). On a roadway, this means that if you sprinkle salt on the ice, you can melt it. The salt dissolves into the liquid water in the ice and lowers its freezing point.
